Galley Log + Recipies

The Galley - KP 46

S/V Esprit - Kelly Peterson 46’

The galley aboard Esprit is quite spacious and well designed. This was one of the key factors for us when searching for our next boat, and one of the many reasons for our obsession with the KP 46’s. We spend a LOT of time cooking (and clean-up), so we needed the space to be comfortable, functional, and safe. The U-shape galley is great for wedging in to preparing your next meal whilst the boat rocks and rolls.

We have many of the accommodations of a traditional home kitchen - oven and 3-burner stove, fridge, two-basin sink with hot water, pantry storage, dishwasher (human-powered) and space for favorite gadgets like a food processor, pressure cooker, cast iron dutch oven… we have a lot of clever storage areas! Once upon a time we had a freezer, but that required a tremendous amount of energy and a diesel powered 5kw marine generator to run it. A freezer is something we can live without for now, we don’t eat or store a lot of meat and ice cream is a rare but precious treat. We pulled the generator within a year of owning Esprit, sold it to fund the solar power system mega-upgrade (thanks Sun Powered Yachts!), and are slowly replacing systems to be more modern and energy efficient. Our new Isotherm fridge compressor uses hardly any energy, as it uses the cold water under the boat to stay keep our goods cold!

We cook up a lot of wonderful meals here, and love sharing our space and food with friends and visitors.
